The Energy of Art On Paper

These mixed media drawings and paintings on sheets of paper are created with passion. As I work, I capture my emotions as my creative energy grows with the development of my images.

Media and Technique

All of these are works are created on paper, which is first taped down to a drawing board. Usually the first layers of the image is built up with charcoal and graphite before I move on to the use of gessos, India ink, and a variety of acrylic media. On the heavier paper substrates I often include threads and other layers of paper for added texture. The tools I use to apply the media range from brushes, pens, and pencils to power sanders, serrated pottery ribs, and putty knives, to name a few.

Meaning

I once wrote a poem about meaning in which I first penned the phrase “Meaning is self-inflicted.” Yet these works are full of meaning in their own right. As each mark, each layer of color or texture interacts with what came before and, while alone they are nearly insignificant, together they absorb and reflect significance on several levels. Their meaning grows as each work, following patterns formulated on various levels in a manner of speaking, self-assembles. Though I choose the paper and the media to apply, each work is both alive in and of itself. On one level, I’m merely the personage of the one who made it.

One thing often overlooked by the observer, while each work of art I create stands fully on it’s own merit, the totality of its richness is magnified by my entire body of creation. To see only one of my works, is to view that object through a dingy pane of glass.
